The depiction of the vast complexity of the human condition is particularly difficult when it comes to a member of the Stolen Generation. Uncle Bob was forcibly taken from his mother at approx 7 years of age and was never again re-united with her. Uncle Bob, along with other indigenous children were taken from Uluru to Alice Springs and then taken to Croker Island – 1 hour flight off the coast of Darwin.
So far from his home country and family, Uncle Bob was taught to denounce his Aboriginal language, customs and ancestors and lived there until he was an adult.
Despite all that he has been through, Uncle Bob remained positive about a future of reconciliation, mutual respect and continually taught about moving forward without hatred and bitterness. He was a shining example of forgiveness and understanding.
The painting depicted a parallel of Uncle Bob in the present and Uncle Bob with his mother in precious times in their country. The shadow of the hat symbolises bringing the hidden truth of history into the light to be the open truth. The red ochre on the painting is actual red desert sand collected with permission from the spot where Uncle Bob was taken away as a child.
