This signifies not only the physical life force between a woman and child, but also the communication, connection and trust established in this practice.
Breastfeeding was and is as natural as any other life giving function. Children were exposed to it’s normality from childhood and the women would support any new birth and feeding relationship with the wisdom and experience of thousands of generations. Babies were fed not only by their birthing mother but their mother’s sisters (who were their mothers as well) and aunties within the community. This flexibility and communal responsibility for nurturing the young ones helped particularly in times such as when milk took a little longer to come in, or mothers were unavailable at the time.
This image shows the joy, pride and confidence of a woman as she stands strong in nourishing and caring for her children as she is supported and affirmed by her mob.
