This “Aunty” is carrying her niece as she collects food in the dilly bag over her left shoulder secured with fashioned twine on her head. Our mother’s sisters are also seen as our mothers and shared the responsibility of caring and looking after the children, while showing them how to gather tukka and learning which plants were edible and in season.
Aunties were often those who were your father’s sisters, or any other non- related woman of that generation in the mob. The circular dots in this piece are representative of the rippling effects of how such relationships radiate outwards to influence and effect the world in a positive way around us.
